The San Diego Air & Space Museum is celebrating more than 50 years as one of our nation’s largest and most comprehensive aero-themed museums. With its interactive exhibits, simulators and stimulating programs to pique children’s interests, there are extraordinary displays for enthusiasts of all ages to learn and explore. This museum is a must-see and provides a world-class learning experience for the entire family.
Established in 1961, the San Diego Air & Space Museum is the fifth largest aviation museum in the nation, housing the second largest aerospace library and archives. The San Diego Air & Space Museum was the first aero-themed museum to be accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, and only the 12th institution in California to be awarded Smithsonian Affiliate status.
Open throughout 2017, the interactive exhibit “Be the Astronaut” invites guests to to launch a rocket, pilot a spaceship and drive a rover in space. Through the use of touch-screen stations, artifacts, and interactive simulator pods built to look like space capsules, the exhibit teaches visitors about the concepts, challenges, and excitement of spaceflight.
The exhibit features eight navigation stations, eight science stations and 16 fly stations. In addition, visitors can check out a life-size spacesuit, and displays that address astronauts’ food and nutrition and safety in space and the effects of gravity on the human body.
