Spend the night on the world’s oldest active sailing ship docked along the San Diego waterfront.
San Diego, CA — The Maritime Museum of San Diego’s mission is to serve as the community memory of our seafaring experiences by collecting, preserving, and presenting our rich maritime heritage and historic connections with the Pacific world. The Museum is proud to announce the return of the widely popular Star of India Family Overnight Experience. There will be three opportunities on Fridays, June 28, July 26, and August 9, from 2:00 p.m. until 9:00 a.m. the following morning. Participating families will stay aboard the 1863 bark Star of India, docked along the waterfront at the Maritime Museum of San Diego, embarking on a voyage of the imagination as they sign on as the “crew” and work with our talented Living History staff, experiencing what a sailor’s life was like during the Great Age of Sail.
Normally provided as the Maritime Museum of San Diego’s Living History program, primarily serving elementary school classes, this is a rare opportunity for families wanting to participate in this exciting experience. According to Peter DiSimone, Director of Education for the Maritime Museum, “For the last four years we have received an abundance of requests to bring this program back, ranging from families whose schools do not participate in this program to parents of students whose schools have attended and just want to relive the excitement. This is the first school year we have offered overnight programs since 2020, with overwhelming success. Given the demand for this immersive and memorable experience aboard Star of India, we are offering three overnight dates for families to choose from this summer.”
Instructors will be in character and in costume, teaching various activities such as moving cargo and raising sails. Accommodations aboard Star of India are 19th-century and likened to a camping trip. Held dockside at the Maritime Museum, guests of the overnight adventure will see areas of the ship normally closed to the public and sleep on her “tween decks” out of the elements. Tickets are $125.00 per participant ages six and up ($100 Maritime Museum of San Diego Member) and include dinner and breakfast. Space is limited. An adult must accompany all youth participants (anyone under eighteen).
