For the last 40+ years, Kansas City Barbeque has provided Thanksgiving dinner at no charge to active duty military personnel. The idea originated when the owner, Martin Blair was growing up in San Diego. His parents would always invite a couple of enlisted sailors who didn’t have any local family to share Thanksgiving dinner.
Martin and his wife Cindy opened the Kansas City Barbeque in 1983 and have always enjoyed a good Navy relationship. This has included the filming of two Top Gun scenes in 1985 and hosting the Top Gun School, to numerous hail and farewell parties, the largest collection of Navy hats on display West of the Mississippi, left by the numerous departing and arriving sailors, and an extensive collection of donated First Responder patches. Top Gun: Maverick includes a flashback of that scene, inspiring many to stop by again!
The Blair’s are glad that they have been able to pass the tradition along, and provide a family atmosphere for those in the military away from home. “We’ve got plenty of TV’s with football games and a fun casual feeling. Anyone interested should contact the restaurant for a reservation so we know how many birds to smoke (619) 231-9680.
