Don’t just look … touch! At the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, science comes alive through hands-on learning experiences designed to wow and inspire visitors of all ages. Create colored shadows, touch a tornado, examine the vibration of guitar strings and engage with a variety of scientific phenomena through more than 100 “do touch” exhibits. Creative visitors will love imagining, inventing, designing and experimenting in the Tinkering Studio, and building their own free-form structures with wooden planks in Block Busters! And kids ages 5 and under rule in their very own exhibition, “Kid City.”
In addition to the Fleet’s permanent exhibits, the science center hosts traveling exhibitions, including the mind-bending new exhibition, “ILLUSION: Nothing Is As It Seems” (on view through Jan. 11, 2015). Featuring more than 20 intriguing exhibits, ILLUSION playfully combines techniques used by magicians and explored by neuroscientists to reveal how our perceptions are often quite different from what we actually observe. Prepare to have your senses distorted and your mind mystified by this innovative exhibition, making its North American debut here at the Fleet.
Before or after touring the galleries, be sure to catch a film or planetarium show in Southern California’s only IMAX® Dome Theater, the Fleet’s iconic Heikoff Giant Dome Theater. In the Dome Theater, viewers are immersed in images and given the sensation of being suspended in space. Explore the ends of the Earth, dive deep into the ocean or float through outer space—all without leaving the comfort of your seat.
Satiate your appetite with sandwiches, salads and other healthy treats at Galileo’s Café, and enjoy outdoor patio seating opposite Balboa Park’s iconic fountain. Keep the scientific learning and discovery going at home with unique educational toys and games, books, IMAX DVDs and more available for purchase at the North Star Science Store.
