Blast off to outer space in the new immersive exhibit “Above & Beyond” at the San Diego Air & Space Museum. There are more than 20 interactive stations that explore the ingenuity and science behind human flight — from the Wright brothers’ triumph at Kitty Hawk in 1903 to plans for expeditions to Mars.
From games to simulations and engaging narration, there is something for everyone: Design and test-fly a supersonic jet. Experience flight as a bird or futuristic wing-flapping aircraft. Take an elevator ride from Earth to the edge of space.
Want to fly faster than the speed of sound? Design your own supersonic fighter jet by applying aerodynamics and generation of force. First, step into the Full Throttle Virtual Jet Design and Test Facility where your mission is to create a maneuverable fighter jet that is capable of supersonic flight. Then you put your jet to the test in an obstacle course-style simulator to see if it can pass through.
In a walk-through station with motion-sensing technology and computer graphics, flap your arms like wings to see yourself a as bird on a video monitor and learn how lift, weight, thrust and drag help birds steer and soar.
Instead of a rocket or space shuttle, take the International Space Elevator, three-minute ride where you’ll soar to 33,000 miles above Earth. Measure your pressure, altitude, temperature and location as you travel through the different layers of Earth’s atmosphere. Peer at the International Space Station, pass through the Van Allen Radiation Belts and explore Earth’s orbit on your way to viewing the awe-inspiring International Spaceport.
Next, put your physical and mental strength to the test as you tackle the challenges of a long-haul flight to Mars. Register your biometrics, complete orientation and earn your passport to visit the red planet. This fun “orientation” game tests three major challenges: psychological difficulties of a long flight, hazards of space radiation and the effects of microgravity. Find out how long it takes to get to space and see if you can make the journey.
“Above and Beyond” celebrates the power of innovation to make dreams take flight. See it trough December 2023. The exhibit is included with the cost of general museum admission. The San Diego Air & Space Museum, 2001 Pan American Plaza, Balboa Park, San Diego, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily (last admission at 4:30 p.m.) Call (619) 234-8291 or visit sandiegoairandspace.org.
