Observe Memorial Day and all it signifies on the deck of the USS Midway during the ship’s annual tradition called Legacy Week.
Set for May 24-26, 2014, Legacy Week pays tribute to all those brave men and women who have served in uniform. The USS Midway Museum provides a unique and entirely appropriate venue for these events, variously dignified and exhilaratingly fun.
The proceedings get underway with the Veterans Wreath Ceremony Saturday, May 24. The wreath ceremony is free to attendees. Later in the day, kids and adults alike will love the hands-on fun of the Adventure Discovery Zone. Participants can explore authentic military gear and engage in other activities.
Other events include an opportunity to meet aviators whose aircraft are exhibited in the museum, a blood drive and an American Freedom Festival Benefit Concert on Saturday evening. The concert benefits local veterans and military non-profits. Past performers include Kenny Loggins, Three Dog Night, Ronnie Milsap and Creedence Clearwater Revisited.
The Navy Band Region Southwest 40-piece band performance on Sunday and a special Memorial Day ceremony hosted on the flight deck cap off this unforgettable weekend.
Before or after the event dine at Kansas City Barbeque, home to the 1986 hit movie “Top Gun”, this San Diego landmark carries pictures and actual props from the film, including the piano used in a scene in which Goose and Maverick belt out “Great Balls of Fire”.
