Lighthouse Ice Cream

Located a half-block from the ocean, Lighthouse Ice Cream not only features 39 flavors of the sweet treat (both traditional hard scoop and soft serve), but also offers yummy shakes, malts, sundaes and flurries. Notably, this downtown landmark is home to the famous Hot Waffle Ice Cream Sandwich and Big Olaf Special.

For hard-scoop lovers, barrels of everything from classic vanilla, chocolate and strawberry to novel tastes like Cotton Candy and Bubble Gum are offered. Sugar-free alternatives like Black Cherry and gluten-free flavors are also available. Cones range from plain, sugar, waffle, and waffle dipped in chocolate, to specialty cookie cones and crispy pretzel cones. Freshly baked waffle cones and waffle bowls can be filled with one, two or three scoops of ice cream and even a sundae in the cone. Patrons are invited to top off their creations with sprinkles and candy, like Reese’s Pieces, cookie dough and more, or even dip into like hard-shell toppings, such as cherry or chocolate.

In the mood for soft serve? The shop offers several flavors, including its latest twist, Dole Whip, a summertime favorite. Equally fun are the shop’s flurries combining soft serve ice cream and candy. Try the Cookie Craze, Peanut Butter Avalanche or Malted Heath. For a nostalgic treat, order a Root Beer Float, made with A & W Root Beer.

Not to be missed is the store’s showstopper, the Hot Waffle Ice Cream Sandwich, especially with bacon! The sandwich may be combined with any ice cream flavor for a sensational breakfast or any-time-of-day treat. Also divine is the Big Olaf, a double scoop waffle cone sundae with whipped cream, nuts, a cherry and a choice of topping.

Open since June of 1997 at its current location at  5059 Newport Ave., Lighthouse continues to satisfy both locals and out-of-towners, who can be found savoring their desserts on the sunny patio. In fact, eating ice cream at this iconic landmark has become a family tradition. Walls are adorned with photos and collages from loyal customers. Canine companions are also welcome at Lighthouse, which serves Frosty Paws dog treats.
