Kansas City Barbeque
The Food is Always Smokin’ at Kansas City Barbeque! A San Diego Landmark and home to the 1986 hit movie "Top Gun".
The food is always smokin’ at Kansas City Barbeque, an easygoing hangout serving hearty helpings of barbeque and beer in downtown San Diego. Home to the 1986 hit movie “Top Gun,” this San Diego landmark celebrated the blockbuster’s 38th anniversary recently — as well as its own 41st birthday (having opened in 1983) — in May. The restaurant carries pictures and actual props from the film, including the piano used in a scene in which Goose and Maverick (played by Anthony Edwards and Tom Cruise, respectively) belt out “Great Balls of Fire.”
Most patrons enjoy sitting outside on the expansive patio, taking in amazing downtown views and demolishing racks of ribs. Small wonder this landmark continues to be voted by locals as the best downtown barbecue restaurant. Aside from its tasty ribs, the place also serves sandwiches, chicken and beef, and delicious side dishes including cole slaw, beans, fries, to-die-for onion rings, potato salad, corn on the cob, and macaroni and cheese.
Lunch is served daily from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. followed by dinner from 5 p.m.- 1 a.m. Happy Hour runs every day from 3:30-6:30 p.m. and features food and beer specials. Late-Night Happy Hour starts at 11 p.m.
“Top Gun” fans will appreciate the decor. Visit the bar and take home a “Top Gun” tank top, t-shirt, or hat! Postcards are also available. Also remarkable is the restaurant’s “shrine,” a motley collection of license plates, military hats and more. Also, a juke box pumps out a good combination of oldies and goodies mixed with newer songs.
Kansas City Barbeque is a proud supporter of the men and women serving in the armed forces and features daily specials, friendly service and memorabilia that make everyone feel right at home. For 41 years, the eatery has served up its annual free Thanksgiving dinner for active duty military, who enjoy smoked turkey dinner buffet served with all the fixings.
Located steps from Seaport Village, the floating U.S.S. Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum, Maritime Museum of San Diego, the convention center and downtown’s major hotels, the restaurant is a great choice for corporate and private events. It caters to large groups of 30-500 both on premises and off premises. Popular events include birthday parties, military hail and farewell parties and “Top Gun” sales parties. The restaurant has a barbecue smoker for large offsite events.
