In September 2021, CBX – the only binational airport terminal in the United States – surpassed the 12 million passenger mark!
In fact, during May, June and July of 2021 more travelers crossed the bridge than in the same months of 2019 representing an increasing demand for vacationers heading south. This impressive uptick of travelers mainly represents U.S. citizens as Mexican nationals have been restricted from entering the U.S. for non-essential travel. The numbers will likely soar once the border is fully open.
Since its opening in 2015, millions upon millions of savvy travelers on their way to and from San Diego and Mexico have safely and quickly crossed the 390-foot enclosed pedestrian skybridge that spans the U.S.-Mexico border directly into the Tijuana International Airport (TIJ), and this year nearly 1.9 million travelers have already taken advantage of this unique and convenient method of travel this year with numbers growing every month. In 2019 a record 2.9 million travelers crossed that year alone.
To accommodate the millions more travelers who will pass through over the upcoming years, a 6,945-foot expansion and renovation project is now underway slated for completion later this year. It includes enlarging the processing area for U.S. Customs and Border Protection and adding a car rental facility and an area for taxis and ride shares. Ambitious future plans include a parking garage, hotel rooms, a gas station and retail shops.
From the incredible convenience to Southern California travelers heading to and from Mexico, the cost savings and ease of use, travelers love CBX in San Diego!
