PassPort to San Diego
A few friends and I wanted to see some live theater recently and the musical “Chaps!” sounded fun and entertaining.
We headed for beautiful Coronado to Lamb’s Players Theatre, a charming venue with excellent views of the stage from every seat in the house.
The show, a musical comedy set during World War II, has been very popular and
has been extended again, this time to May 19.
The storyline is simple: Tex Riley and America’s favorite singing cowboys are scheduled to perform in a London BBC studio for an eager audience. When things go awry, and singers fail to show for the broadcast, the very British staffers are forced to improvise and act out as American cowboys on the range.
The Brits, aided by the tour manager of “Tex Riley’s Radio Roundup,” pull it off with performances of cowboy classics like “Cool Water,” “Tumblin’ Tumbleweeds,” “Ragtime Cowboy Joe,” and “Sioux City Sue,” among others.
Tour manager “Mabel,” played by Caitie Grady, sings a beautiful rendition of “White Cliffs
of Dover.” Kudos to Arusi Santi, as well, as Stan the sound effects man.
Described as “Monty Python meets the Old West,” the musical is toe-tapping, old-fashioned fun. Enjoy “Chaps!” through May 19, 2019 at Lamb’s Players Theatre, 1142 Orange Ave., Coronado.
Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday; 8 p.m. Friday; 4 and 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
Tickets: (619) 437-6000 or lambsplayers.org.
