Passport to San Diego
Sunday, March 2, was a cold, rainy day so I took my son and his friend to San Diego Skateworld for the first time. It had been 35 years since I had gone roller-skating and it was my 10-year-old son’s first time.
The rink was packed! Birthday parties and families were all having a great time skating to top-40 hits. It took a few times around the rink before it began to come back to me. My son, however, decided he hated it, could’t do it and wanted to go home. I let him pout, seated along the edge of the rink while I skated and continued to enjoy myself. Finally, my son got bored with sitting there and decided to join me. The more times around the rink he skated, the better he got. We even participated in several games they played throughout the session. Just before the session was over, my son begged for his own pair of skates. (I relented and purchased them.)
Skateworld’s owner and staff were all very friendly and accommodating. They even let my son try out his new skates on the rink once they had closed. He and his friend really enjoyed having the rink to themselves. I had to pull them off so the staff could go home! We can’t wait to go back and even plan on attending a roller derby game for something different to observe.

Skateworld’s next roller-derby match starts at 5 p.m. March 15.
