Step into history while exploring Old Town San Diego, commemorating its 250th year as the birthplace of California. Old Town was the first European settlement on the West Coast and home of California’s first city. Commemoration events in 2019 include the Founders’ Day Festival on Sept. 14-15, organized by The City of San Diego and Old Town Chamber of Commerce. Other signature chamber events are Old Town’s Fourth of July celebration; “Taste + Tequila” (a sampling of Old Town’s best Mexican food and spirits) on Oct. 3; and the well-known Day of the Dead event running Nov. 1-3. Not to be missed is the chamber’s Old Town Harney Street Market, featuring handmade works from local artisans 9 a.m.-4 p.m. every Sat.-Sun. Visitors can also enjoy Old Town’s colorful shops and restaurants, such as Bazaar del Mundo Shops and the popular Casa Guadalajara, serving Mexican fare; and Fiesta de Reyes, a charming village marketplace. Steps away, stop in at The Cosmopolitan Hotel and Restaurant, serving American and Mexican cuisine in the hotel’s quaint dining room or on the outdoor terrace. At the Mormon Battalion Historical Site and other museums, docents provide tours dressed in period attire. Other historic sites include the Whaley Museum and Adobe Chapel Museum.
