Explore the elegant Oceanside Museum of Art, a premier regional art museum and a leader of arts and culture in San Diego. In addition to several highly praised contemporary art exhibitions per year, museum programming includes classes, lectures, docent tours, parties, concerts, films, culinary events, and chartered travel to other cultural art venues and destinations.
Located in the historic Gill Building in the heart of downtown Oceanside, the two-story glass and concrete venue is filled with lots of natural light. Patrons enjoy eclectic, modern and memorable exhibitions rotating among its four galleries. In addition to Southern California art, everything from regional tattoo artistry, fiber arts (weaving, quilting, embroidery), botanical photography, impressionist visions of the SoCal landscape and even creature designs from “Avatar” and “Star Trek” have been showcased. Off-site exhibitions at North Coast Repertory Theatre in Solana Beach are inspired by and run in conjunction with the theatre’s plays and musicals.
For visitors needing a creative outlet, the museum features watercolor, painting, ceramics, drawing, paper-making and many more exciting workshops. Everyone from beginners to advanced artists are welcome, and experienced instructors keep the classroom fun and informative. Lecture series, and coffee and conversation with fellow artists are offered as well.
OMA also invites kids to explore the visual arts with drawing, painting, mixed-media, and other hands-on activities at the Van Hunnick Education Center. Students are encouraged to explore their creativity through new techniques, and to become part of a greater community of art lovers. During Creative Kids classes, parents can explore the exhibitions while kids ages 2-5 experience art, music, and stories. Prices are for children’s registration, no fee for the parent. The museum also hosts kid-friendly birthday parties and field trips for school classes, youth groups, and scout troops.
The museum’s special programming includes community fun and cultural events for everyone, such as concerts, a culinary cinema series, a free Family Art Day and First Friday Art Walk. Don’t miss “Art After Dark” events, featuring evenings of wine, beer, food trucks and themed creative entertainment. An alternative to the dinner-and-movie date, lively “Art After Dark” parties regularly draw hundreds of guests. Of special note is OMA’s annual summer gala supporting the museum’s future exhibitions, collections and educational programs. In 2017, “The Museum Ball: Puttin’ On The Ritz” will treat attendees to cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, an al fresco dinner and dancing under the stars. Visit http://oma-online.org/ball2017/ for more information.
In addition to the gala, museum patrons are invited to become members. Benefits include free admission, guest passes, event discounts, and even reduced prices at the museum store, which sells jewelry, glass, clothes, and other original works of art.
The Oceanside Museum of Art is open from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, and from noon-5 p.m. Sundays. Call (760) 435-3721 or visit www.oma-online.org.
