Groove to the beat of this funky-cool California beach community, famous for its long fishing pier, annual events and year-round farmers market.

Spend time in this funky-cool California beach community, famous for its long fishing pier, annual street fair and chili cook-off, Oktoberfest, holiday parade, antiques stores, year-round farmers market and oceanfront boardwalk.

A great place to start your visit to Ocean Beach “OB” is at the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association on Bacon Street (oceanbeachsandiego.com). Smiling staffers can recommend favorite eateries, tasting rooms, shops, entertaining events and specialty services.

Essential to any visit to Ocean Beach is a stroll down Newport Avenue, home to Humble Heart,  known as “the San Diego thrift store with more.” Browse their brand name clothing, shoes and accessories, hand-dyed tie dyes, hand-poured soy wax candles and abundance of plants.

Looking for fun in the sun? Check out Dog Beach, where canines cavort in the sand and surf. Afterward, dog owners venture to the nearby do-it-yourself Dog Beach Dog Wash to clean up their furry friends.

Thinking of lunch or dinner? Pick up fresh Italian fare at Leucadia Pizzeria, a take-out and delivery eatery in nearby Point Loma, or enjoy bites and brews at Voltaire Beach House. Down by the pier, enjoy OB’s endless sunsets along with a cool cone from Lighthouse Ice Cream. Also shop and sample goodies at the Oceanside Beach Farmers Market from 4-8 p.m. Wednesdays. A handful of artisan food vendors provide food to go, which you may take home to enjoy. (See more on the Farmers Market below.)

Thinking of staying a while? Start a dream home search with Catrina Russell or CC Summerfield, both top-tier real estate professionals in the area. oceanbeachsandiego.com
