Callaway Vineyard and Winery

Enjoy the taste of excellence at this well-known Temecula Valley winery, which also has a tasting room in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter

Experience exceptional wines by the glass, flight or bottle at this award-winning hilltop winery in Temecula, which also boasts a sleek tasting room in San Diego’s vibrant Gaslamp Quarter.

Established in 1969 by Ely Callaway Jr. (who went on to gain fame and fortune with his signature golf clubs), Callaway is well-known and for good reason: The sprawling Temecula property features a premium wine selection and a tasting room; a lovely gourmet restaurant – Meritage; and a high-quality gift shop. All are surrounded by postcard-worthy views of vineyards planted with Viognier, Syrah, Dolcetto, Zinfandel, Sangiovese, Grenache, Roussanne, Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.

Walking tours of the beautiful 20-acre estate are offered at 12 pm and 2 pm daily. Tour guides provide top-notch hospitality, teaching guests about each of the estate-grown wines and how Temecula has emerged as a wine-growing region. Following the tour, visitors are invited to the tasting room to sample the menu of stellar wines. The tasting room is open from 11 am to 6 pm daily, and one-ounce tastes of six wines are offered. Or enjoy the wine flights on Callaway’s terrace while relaxing and taking in breathtaking views of Temecula’s wine country. The wine flights are two-ounce pours of any three wines selected by the guest.

Steps away, guests may enjoy farm-to-table cuisine at Meritage while gazing onto expansive vineyards. Many ingredients come from the restaurant’s onsite greenhouse and garden. The menu’s emphasis is on small plate fare, creative sandwiches and artfully crafted entrées. Don’t miss the bountiful brunch from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. every Sunday. Pair any dish with a glass of sparkling wine for a palate-pleasing combination. The restaurant also features live music and entertainment from local artists. Meritage Restaurant is open daily: Mon-Thurs 11am to 4pm | Fri & Sat 11am to 8pm | Sundays 11am to 6pm and encourages reservations for parties of eight or more. Make a reservation at (951) 587-8889.

Naturally, Callaway makes for the perfect backdrop for weddings and special occasions, and the winery considers it a pleasure to help you create precious memories. Settings for weddings and special events include the Vu deck, Barrel Room, courtyard and west lawn. Appointments are required to tour the wedding and special event facilities. Contact the Events Department at events@callawaywinery.com or (951) 676-4001 to schedule a site tour.

In downtown San Diego, Callaway’s tasting room has been a welcome addition. Its urban home among restaurants and nightclubs makes it a prime spot to savor a drink — before a Padres game, before or after dinner, just after work or to simply start the night out. Walking in, the long bar and smiling staffers invite guests to saunter up and sample. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide some great people-watching to go with the sips. A flight of five wines is $20, a library tasting of three older vintages is $25, and all offerings can be purchased by the glass or bottle. For an extra palate-pleaser, order the artisanal cheese and charcuterie board — perfect with any glass of red, white or rosé. The downtown location is open seven days a week.

For a truly memorable occasion filled with fun and relaxation, visit Callaway Vineyard & Winery in Temecula, 32720 Rancho California Road, (951) 676-4001 or (800) 472-2377; or downtown San Diego, 517 Fourth Ave. (619-478-0899). For upcoming events, visit callawaywinery.com
