In the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter, the historic Horton Grand Hotel exudes elegance, grandeur and charm as one would expect, but also surprises guests with its urban flare, luxurious accommodations and modern amenities for savvy travelers. You’re in for a truly memorable experience whether you book a stay at this charming boutique hotel, stop in for a cocktail or plan the wedding of your dreams in the enchanting, outdoor New Orleans-style courtyard.
Opened in 1886 the hotel was an elegant, ornate Italianate Victorian structure built by a German immigrant in his desire to replicate the Innsbruck Hotel in Austria. It was one of 300 structures built during the boom of the 1880s to accommodate the influx of people to the little seacoast town of 5,000. Over, 26,000 visitors flocked to the town after the arrival of San Diego’s first transcontinental railroad in 1885. In 1886, at the age of 38, famed lawman Wyatt Earp arrived in San Diego, to investigate reports of a real-estate boom, in what was dubbed the “land of the sundown sea.” Wyatt Earp spent seven years as a guest of the hotel.
Travel in time to the late 1970s, when two of the few remaining historical buildings left standing in San Diego, the Grand Horton and Khale Saddlery Hotels, were scheduled for demolition to make room for the Horton Plaza mall development project. But following the vision of a local developer named Dan Pearson and after a valiant effort to save these buildings by local historical preservation activists and the San Diego-based Save Our Heritage Organization, the structures were spared from the wrecking ball, dismantled, moved, restored and joined together by a beautiful, outdoor courtyard, to form the current hotel structure.
Renowned restaurant Salt & Whiskey, elegant ballrooms, state-of-the-art meeting spaces and a grand historic theater – all combine to create a unique venue of authentic elegance and excitement for either business or pleasure. The Victorian charm of the Horton Grand makes it the picture-perfect choice among downtown San Diego wedding venues. While offering more than 18,500 square feet of versatile meeting and event space that can comfortably seat up to 500, the friendly event team will take on and take care of all the planning details so you can spend time with your guests.
Whether enjoying the fireplace in a luxurious balcony room of this boutique hotel, savoring a romantic dinner for two, listening to live jazz, or planning a casual, brunch offering bottomless mimosas, the Horton Grand Hotel will impress and delight you from the moment you arrive.

Using the best ingredients California has to offer, such as foraged mushrooms, Certified Angus Beef®, delicate seafood, locally grown fruits & vegetables and artisan cheeses, the chef at Salt & Whiskey utilizes international influences on flavor and techniques. This charming boutique hotel restaurant is open 6am-10pm for breakfast, lunch and dinner with indoor and outdoor dining available. Guests arriving at Salt & Whiskey enter an airy atrium lit and warmed by the sun, pouring through skylights and long windows facing the quaint brick courtyard.
Salt & Whiskey is inspired by the often-debated origins of whiskey itself. During the Victorian era, it is believed that over a quarter of the whiskey distilleries in the United Kingdom were near or by the ocean. Due to the salty condition of the air, the barrels that contained the distilled whiskey would take on that which was around them, giving the whiskey a subtle salty taste. Today, whiskey drinkers still chase that original flavor.
With over 500 whiskeys, scotches and bourbons to choose from, Salt & Whiskey provides the perfect location to unwind, offering a warm and welcoming ambience with sophisticated décor. Whether you’re closing a business deal in the early hours of the day or would like a drink after work prior to a night on the town, this cozy setting mixes rich wood, chandelier lighting and delectable cocktails into a one-of-a-kind urban experience. Enjoy live and local entertainment every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening and a happy hour daily from 2pm – 6pm.
Whether enjoying breakfast with the family, savoring a romantic dinner for two, listening to live jazz, or planning a casual brunch offering bottomless mimosas, Salt & Whiskey in the Horton Grand Hotel will impress and delight you from the moment you arrive. Reservations available.
