Gillespie Field is the oldest and largest of the County’s eight airports.
Gillespie Field includes not just runways, tower, and a terminal, but many airport-related businesses as well. In addition to the airport itself, Gillespie Field includes two business parks which provide more than 3,000 jobs in the City of El Cajon and a $110 million boost to the local economy in direct, indirect and induced revenues.
The airport is home to flight schools, repair and maintenance shops, aircraft storage, food and beverage services, fuel, instrument and avionics shops, rental cars and aircraft sales and rental services. Hotels are within easy reach of the field.
San Diego Air & Space Museum Annex
The airport is also home to the San Diego Air & Space Museum’s annex, which has grown to become an integral part of the Museum’s aircraft restoration and replica reproduction program. It is open to the public and has on display many vintage and modern aircraft; and has an Atlas ICBM rocket as its gate guard, replica of the Spirit of St. Louis, and a recently restored F-102A Delta Dagger with drop tanks. Staffed mainly by volunteers, the Facility has produced some of SDASM’s finest work.
The Annex is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:00am to 3:00pm. The Annex is located on the north side of Gillespie Field. Please call (619)258-1221 for more information. There is no charge for admission but donations are accepted.
Annual Air Show San Diego
Every June, the San Diego wing of the Commemorative Air Force presents their annual San Diego Airshow (formerly Wings Over Gillespie Air Show) at Gillespie Field. The Commemorative Air Force has the largest airworthy collection of former military aircraft in the world. It has over 150 flyable combat aircraft, making it the world’s seventh largest air force! The CAF’s purpose is to acquire, maintain and operate vintage military aircraft, ground vehicles and associated artifacts for the education and enjoyment of present and future generations.
Each day of the event features re-enactments of WWII and Vietnam War aerial battles complete with pyrotechnic displays, “bombing” runs and strafing attacks. You’ll be able to get up close to famous combat aircraft from World War II and see classic warbirds and other interesting aircraft take to the sky!
